About Us

At Ditto’s Canine Learning Centre, we believe that every dog deserves the freedom to learn, grow, and thrive in an environment built on trust, patience, and understanding. Our Let Them philosophy is rooted in the idea that dogs should be encouraged to express themselves, communicate naturally, and develop confidence through gentle, positive training methods - because when dogs feel safe and supported, they can truly shine.

This philosophy has been shaped by Jane Smith, a seasoned dog trainer and canine behavior educator with 36 years of experience. Throughout her career, Jane has worked with thousands of dogs and their owners, helping to bridge the gap between human expectations and canine instincts. Her approach is grounded in science, compassion, and deep respect for the individuality of every dog.

The name Ditto’s is more than just a title - it’s a tribute to a very special dog who shaped the foundation of this training centre. Ditto, a beloved canine companion, embodied everything we strive for in dog training: resilience, curiosity, and the incredible bond between humans and dogs. Her journey, filled with learning and growth, became a symbol for what we want all dogs to experience - freedom to explore, space to learn, and guidance rooted in respect. Ditto’s legacy lives on through every lesson taught here, reminding us that every dog deserves to be heard, understood, and allowed to thrive.

At Ditto’s, we are more than just a training facility - we are a community where dog owners can connect, learn, and support one another in their journey of companionship, education, and ethical training. And at the heart of our success is our dedicated team - a passionate group of trainers, educators, and canine advocates who bring their expertise, empathy, and commitment to every dog they work with.

Together, we empower owners to:

  • Let Them Learn – Providing education on canine behavior through workshops, coaching, and ethical training techniques.
  • Let Them Thrive – Helping dogs build confidence, communicate naturally, and grow into their best selves.
  • Let Them Connect – Fostering relationships between dogs and their owners while creating a strong community of support and shared learning.
  • Let Them Teach – Giving owners the knowledge and tools to reinforce positive training and lifelong learning at home.

We stand firmly against quick fixes, misleading promises, and aversive tools. With decades of expertise in behavioral modification, puppy training, and rehabilitation, Jane leads alongside her incredible team, believing that dogs learn best through kindness, patience, and mutual trust—not fear or punishment. Our approach is built on respect, communication, and trust—not control or force.

Whether you're training a new puppy or working through behavioral challenges, we're here to help you and your dog connect, learn, and succeed—together.

Let Them Learn. Let Them Thrive. Let Them Be Dogs.

In 2011 I began a wonderful partnership with Jane at Dittos. This collaboration not only blossomed into a professional success but also into a long-lasting personal connection - we got married! Through our work together, I have gained extensive experience in handling diverse dog breeds and developed a deep understanding of canine behavior and the humane/canine bond.

Beyond my professional interests, I enjoy a variety of hobbies such as camping, boating, photography, surfing, and skiing. One of my most cherished traditions is starting each day with a morning walk with our beloved dog, Deja Vu.

I have been a dog lover my whole life. I currently have a very friendly yellow lab/retriever cross named Sammy who I got as a pup from Rescue. His mom was a rescue who was pregnant when she came into rescue and had 11 pups who all found good homes. He will be 10 in December but thinks he’s still a 2 year old. We attended Ditto’s puppy and walking classes years ago and enjoyed the relaxed environment and positive approach involved.

Seeing the joy dogs bring to people’s lives is rewarding for me, and I look forward to helping people find training as a way to enjoy their together time with their dog and help their dog learn to be their best self.

Some of you may know me from the Mahone Bay Post Office where I have worked for the past 12 years. When I'm not sorting parcels and mail, you can find me at home vacuuming up the fur from my Golden Retriever, Maisie, and our three cats, Archie, Esme and Hugo.

I truly believe that a kind and gentle approach to training builds a more loving, trusting and enjoyable relationship with your dog and look forward to helping people forge those relationships with their canine companions.

I am the proud owner of two wonderful Border Collies, Canner and Shirley. Canner, a purebred from Canning, loves swimming, playing frisbee, and occasionally picking on his sister. Shirley, whom we rescued from a puppy mill a couple of years ago, is the sweetest little girl you'll ever meet. She enjoys going on hikes and playing with her big brother.

When I'm not spending time with my dogs, I love horse riding and hiking with friends and family. These activities bring me so much joy and balance.
